Future developments

The GDC also say " additional skills a Dental Therapist might develop during their career include:

  1. Tooth whitening to the prescription of a dentist,
  2. Prescribing radiographs (deciding a dental x-ray is needed)
  3. Administering inhalational sedation (Happy air) and
  4. Removing sutures (stitches) after the wound has been checked by a dentist.
  5. Varying the detail of a prescription but not the direction of a prescritpion
What this last one means, for example, is that if the dentist prescribes a filling in a given tooth to be a particular size and shape, then if during the filling preparation, it turns out that more decay is found in another part of the tooth, then that filling can be extended or its shape changed according to the Therapists discretion.
